Framed Cigarette Card Dog Series c.1930

This intriguing artwork was created with a collection of twenty-four vintage cigarette cards that were part of a Dog series, circa 1930. Each card is cut and matted to show both sides, the dog’s picture on one side, and the description of the breed on the other. Within the beautiful black and gold frame, there are two pieces of glass, one covering the front of the artwork, and the other covering the back to protect the text and descriptions of the dogs. The twenty-four dogs displayed are: the Fox Terrier, the Bloodhound, the Newfoundland, the Irish Wolfhound, the Pointer, the Bull Terrier, the Airedale, the Scottish Terrier, the Cairn Terrier, the Sealyham Terrier, the Greyhound, the Old English Sheepdog, the French Bulldog, the St. Bernard, the Pekingese, the English Setter, the Chow-Chow, the Great Dane, the Alsatian, the Golden Spaniel, the Cocker Spaniel, the Bulldog, and the Golden Retriever. The entire, framed piece is 19″ tall x 16″ wide, and it is in great condition.

History of Cigarette Cards
Cigarette cards started in the mid-to-late 19th century. They were initially blank cards, used to add strength to cigarette packs. A few years later, you could find them printed with advertising details, and by the early 1900s, many were produced bearing pictures. The cards were then organized in series of the same subjects, with usually 50 cards in a series that were designed to be collected as a marketing gimmick to entice people to buy cigarettes. For dog enthusiasts, this beautifully created, framed artwork captures the spirit of some of the most popular dog breeds of that era.
