This solid bronze pipe tamper, is also a wonderful, freestanding, Great Dane figurine. The detailing of this Great Dane’s head is remarkable. And although it is quite miniature in size, measuring 1 3/4″ tall with a base diameter of just under 1/2″, it will certainly hold its own as a unique and valuable addition to any Great Dane dog collection.
This solid bronze pipe tamper, is also a wonderful, freestanding, Great Dane figurine. The detailing of this Great Dane’s head is remarkable. And although it is quite miniature in size, measuring 1 3/4″ tall with a base diameter of 1/4″, it will certainly hold its own as a unique and valuable addition to any Great Dane dog collection.
Its primary use was as a pipe tamper, which beginning in the Victorian era (1890s), was a popular, small tool designed to use to pack or “tamp” loose tobacco into the bowl of a pipe. They were usually made of metal and often quite ornate. This dog head is particularly exquisite. It is in excellent condition.
This piece is either artist signed with a “WS” on the underside of the base, or it was inscribed “WS”, in order for it to also be used as a wax seal. We don’t know, but it is interesting to ponder.
It would make a very unique and cherished gift to any dog enthusiast.
