Antique Bulldog Matchstick Holder
This unique antique porcelain matchstick holder is in the shape of a Bulldog seated in front of his dog house.
Often grouped into the category of “fairings”, this wonderfully unique porcelain matchstick holder was made and hand-painted in Germany and given out at outdoor fairs in England in the early 1900’s.
Measuring 3 1/2″ tall x 2 1/2″ long x 2 1/4″ wide, this Bulldog sits proudly in the doorway of his doghouse. He is in excellent condition with a gilded collar and chain.
Although he is listed as a matchstick holder, he may have been used as a salt cellar, a sugar bowl, or perhaps even as an ashtray.
However you choose to use him, you can’t help but smile at his animated expression, and dignified posture. He certainly looks like the perfect Victorian gentleman.
What a great gift he would make for any Bulldog lover and collector.
