This exquisite portrait of a Saint Bernard dog is done entirely in petit point needlework.
The needlework is flawless and the dog’s portrait shows off this particular breed’s huge heart to perfection. Gentle, calm, and watchful are the most cited characteristics for Saint Bernard dogs and each one is built in to this needlework depiction beautifully.
It is framed under glass and the oval frame is quite unique. It is made from molded plaster, and painted a bright, metallic gold in front and black along the sides. This frame, itself, is as much of a piece of art as the needlepoint artwork it holds. Such a frame was very popular in the early 19th century, and then “banned” in the 1950’s as being too decorative. Now, they have made a huge comeback, and are considered quite valuable on their own merit.
This frame is in excellent condition. There is some writing on the back, that looks to be an inscription in another language…possibly French?
The piece is framed under glass and it is quite heavy (just under 2 1/2 lbs.) It measures 15 1/2″ tall x 13″ wide.
