This extraordinary bronze miniature of a Setter dog has a wonderful deep brown patina, and is centered atop a stepped oval base, covered in what appears to be a bed of leaves. It is clearly inscribed “P.J. Mene” on the base just in front of the dog’s front paws. P.J. Mene is considered the pioneer of animal bronze sculpture in the 19th century, and also the foremost expert of that era in the process of lost wax casting. This dog has the classic stance and fine detailing that characterizes Mene’s work. This wonderful rendering of the dog shows musculature and an intent expression. This bronze dog would look fabulous on a desk or on a small side table. It is in excellent condition, standing 3 3/4″ tall x 4 1/2″ long x 2″ wide. As a gift, it would most certainly be a valued and much appreciated addition to any collection, or a classic addition to a special friend or family member’s home.
