Lea Stein is a French artist (1931- ) and accessories maker, well-known for her compressed plastic buttons, brooches and bracelets. Often hailed as the “most notable and innovative designer of plastic jewelry of the 20th century, she developed a process of layering very thin sheets of plastic and laminating them to create “multi-colored sandwiches of plastic”. Each “sandwich” was baked and cooled and cut into shapes during a process that could extend up to 6 months! This fantastic brooch is pearized white with bright black eyes and nose. He is wearing a stunning “Union Jack” coat. It has the distinctive v-shaped metal clasp inscribed with “Lea Stein Paris”, and it is heat-mounted into the plastic, which dates it in her vintage period from 1969-1981. It is in excellent condition, and would make an extraordinary gift (if you can bear to part with it!)
