Here’s to metal…the great pretender in vintage and antique canine collectibles!
“Spelter”, also known as zinc alloy was often given a bronze or painted finish to look like pieces made of other metals.
While the metal may not be perceived as valuable, many highly collectible pieces, such as the Art Nouveau, and Art Deco pieces of the early – mid 20th century were often made of spelter.
This may be the one exception to the rule that real beauty is “on the inside.”
