We are so excited to have this Cocker Spaniel Pup, designed and signed by Jan Allan. Not only is it beautiful, and in excellent condition, but it has a unique and very interesting history! Jan Allan was the name used by Elisabeth Anne Philbrick Hall (1917-2009), on all her sculptures designed for Contemporary Arts (CA), founded in 1939 and closed in 1947. She was known as one of the finest American animal sculptors. This particular pup is known as the “Jan Allan” Cocker. One of her most famous pieces, in that it was the sculpture that was copied and sold by Woolworths. CA brought The Woolworth Company to court for infringement of copyright, and in a landmark decision, that took 6 years, CA won it’s case against Woolworth. This case also caused an important change in copyright law, stating that “A copy need not be identical to be considered plagiarism.” This adorable Cocker Spaniel has only a few slight paint rubs, but no chips or cracks. Jan Allan’s signature is incised into the side of her left rear foot (see last photo). She is 5″ tall x 6 1/4″ long x 4 1/2″ wide. Her details show the fur lines in her beautiful Cocker ears, fur lines in all the places that distinguish this breed and big, dark, deep set eyes with eyelids that will just melt your heart! For Cocker Spaniel dog lovers, for chalkware collectors, or for anyone who loves beautiful, sculpted art with an interesting provenance…this sweet dog is the perfect choice!
